Short answer

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells. Clinic products are usually extracted from the culture media of iPS cells or umbilical cord stem cells and given by infusion or applied to the skin, all in one day. As of September 2026 exosomes are not covered by Japan's Regenerative Medicine Act registration, so ask carefully about source and quality testing.

01

What exosomes are

Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles released by cells. They carry proteins and nucleic acids and are thought to play a role in communication between cells.

Clinic exosome products are usually extracted and concentrated from stem cell culture media and contain no cells. The two common types are iPS cell-derived and umbilical cord stem cell-derived, and manufacturing methods and concentrations vary widely between makers.

Important: as of September 2026, exosome products are not covered by Japan's Regenerative Medicine Act registration. The MHLW has warned clinics about safety and is discussing regulation. With no unified quality standard yet, it is up to you to ask the right questions.

02

Common reasons people ask

Clinical evidence in humans is still building. These are common situations, not promises of results.

Maintenance and recovery

Energy and recovery, usually by infusion.

Skin

Applied with mesotherapy devices, for texture and radiance.

Alongside other treatments

Asked about as a complement to stem cell or PRP treatment.

03

The process

Questions to ask before signing

  1. 01Which cells are the exosomes from (iPS, umbilical cord, fat)? Which company makes them, and in what facility?
  2. 02Is there a quality test report (particle count, sterility, endotoxin)?
  3. 03What dose is used, and by infusion or skin application?
  4. 04What does the price include, and how many sessions are recommended?
  5. 05What happens if I feel unwell?

Frequently asked questions

How are exosomes different from stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy uses living cells that must be collected and cultured, and is registered under the Regenerative Medicine Act. Exosomes are substances released by cells, contain no cells, can be given the same day, and are not currently covered by that registration.

iPS-derived or umbilical cord-derived: which is better?

There is no single answer. What matters is whether the manufacturer, facility, quality testing, and dose are clearly documented.

Are exosomes safe?

There is no unified quality standard yet and limited long-term human data. Check the product source and test report, and tell the physician your history and medications.

How many sessions?

There is no fixed number; the physician advises based on your goal. Confirm the number, intervals, and total cost before signing.
